Heartburn or GERD can Kill

Heartburn is a common annoyance. The busy lifestyle, quick meals, fatty or spicy foods all contribute to the occasional need of a chewable pain reliever. The acceptance of heartburn as an inconvenient, but natural, part of the daily grind can blind you to the warning that a severe heartburn symptom can bring.

Heartburn as a Disorder

Heartburn can be a symptom as well as a disorder. Simple heartburn or GERD can be controlled and dealt with. However, heartburn can signal the presence of a much more serious problem. If it’s heartburn, you will have a burning sensation in the chest usually after eating. There may be a spread of the burning to the throat, sometimes accompanied by a bad taste, difficulty in swallowing, belching, coughing, hoarseness and/or wheezing.

It can become worse by lying down or bending over or by eating. Relief can come from an antacid. While the more severe heartburn symptoms may be mistaken for a heart attack, simple heartburn is usually not made worse by exercise. If there is any concern that the pain may signal a heart attack, get help quickly.

Why Use a Sleep Apnea Machine

By Taryn Brava

When we were young we thought it funny to hear my father snoring all over the house. He worked the 'swing shift" at night and would sleep during the day. Now I know that snoring can be a sign of a severe sleep disorder called sleep apnea.

Snoring is an indicator that your airway is not completely open. The sound of a snore is made when the air you breathe in has difficulty pushing past this obstructed area.

Most people who snore do not have severe medical issues. But for 5% of some people this snoring is more serious and is a sign of obstructive sleep apnea.

Apart from snoring, other signs of obstructive sleep apnea are excessive daytime sleepiness, restless sleep, high blood pressure, being overweight and waking up gasping for breath. Some individuals experience high blood pressure when they first wake up due to insufficient oxygen because of not breathing properly. Awaking up with a headache could be an indicator of a high blood pressure due too sleep apnea.

If a sleep specialist diagnoses you with sleep apnea, one of the best treatment is the sleep apnea machine, which is also known as a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. This machine is simple to use as you can have it by your bedside and the air is delivered through a mask over your nose and mouth.

This machine helps by opening your airway to make breathing easier. The use of the sleep apnea machine help stabilize your oxygen levels while you are sleeping. This lets you have a restful night sleep too.

There are serious consequences of leaving sleep apnea untreated. A sleep apnea machine is the optimum choice to maintain your health and overall well being.
